Cultured in China using the Hyriopsis cumingii pearl mussel, Freshwater pearls range in size from 2.0-3.0mm up to 11.0-12.0mm, and even larger these days.
Any quality Freshwater pearl can be selected for the color-treatment process, so you'll find A-AAA Quality Black Freshwater pearls available (caveat - Gem Quality Freshwater pearls will very rarely be dyed; these pearls are too valuable for color-treatments).
Black Freshwater pearls are color-treated, usually dyed.
Popular overtones are: Iridescent "Peacock", Blue-Green, Denim Blue, Violet and Copper.
The color-treatment process is STABLE, so these pearls won't fade, turn or discolor unless intentionally mistreated and exposed to harsh chemicals.
I've noticed a tiny "speckling" of black spots on MANY Black Freshwater pearls upon very close, careful inspection which appears to be unique to this pearl type and color-treatment effects.
Freshwater pearls have a wide variety of shapes. The most common and distinctive are potato shapes, or off-round / oval shapes. The higher-up in quality these pearls get, the rounder the pearl shapes will be. The majority of Black Freshwater pearls are going to be Off-Round to Ovalish to Near-Round in shape.
I hope this short post illuminates some of the Black Freshwater pearl's most distinctive attributes. Which coloration is your favorite?
