Traveling with Your Pearl Jewelry

Are you planning a vacation and wondering how to bring your favorite pearl necklace or pearl earrings along?

Traveling with Jewelry

Let's be honest; traveling can be stressful enough without having to worry about the safety of your beloved pearl jewelry. That's why it's essential to know how to pack your pearls - or any jewelry - when traveling on vacation, especially when traveling by plane.

As someone who loves traveling with my pearls, I can tell you from personal experience that taking extra precautions can make all the difference. Along the way, I've learned a few tips and tricks for how to pack to keep my pearl jewelry safe when I travel. We have to look stylish on vacation after all, right?!

Helpful Hint #1

Besides packing, knowledge of security procedures and, when traveling internationally, any customs regulations will help you navigate airport security with your pearls, saving you time and stress during your travels. When in doubt about airport security procedures and customs regulations, always check with the airlines, tour company or travel agent for up-to-date information and restrictions.

Flying to Vacation

Okay - airline rules and regs aside - let's dive into packing with your pearls!

Here’s My Expert Tips for Traveling with Your Pearls

First - let’s address the obvious.

No matter where you’re going or what type of trip you’re taking, i.e., a family vacation to the beach, a girlfriend’s outing to the city, or a business trip filled with daily meetings and nightly client dinners, it’s essential to pack light and make the most of your luggage space.

Yes, I know. We all start out with the best intentions, and the next thing you know, everything we own is in our suitcase, and we’re sitting on it, along with the kiddos and the dog, to get ‘er zipped!

Like you, I’m well aware that packing light is the way to go, but it isn’t that easy for some of us. So, when it comes to our jewelry, especially our pearl jewelry, the last thing we want to do when traveling is to choose between leaving our favorite pearl necklace or earrings at home or bringing them along and risking having them get lost or damaged.

This is why knowing how to pack your pearl jewelry safely is crucial.

And if we pack our jewelry first - and pack it properly - then we’ll have room for all those other non-essential items, like our toothbrush, shoes and clothes. (Wink-Wink!)

Helpful Hint #2

Always snap pics with your phone of the jewelry you're taking on your trip and email them to yourself or a family member or friend. When possible, take a photo with the receipt for your jewelry next to the piece you're taking. Heaven forbid your jewelry gets lost or stolen; this will give you a snapshot of what you have, where it was purchased and for what price.

The Do's of Packing Your Pearls for Any Adventure

  • Pack your pearls in your carry-on luggage or your personal item.

Doing this provides an extra layer of security during travel. It's scary sometimes what happens to your checked luggage when it's out of sight, and you don't want to risk losing your precious pearls. Keeping your pearls with you always lets you know they're safe and sound. Plus, having your pearls with you on the plane means you can switch up your travel outfit in a flash and arrive at your destination in pearl-fect style!

  • Pack your pearls in a soft pouch or cloth to prevent damage or tangles.

Consider bringing a small jewelry box or case to keep your pearls organized, and avoid storing your pearls with other jewelry pieces that may scratch or damage them.

If you're traveling with a knotted pearl necklace or bracelet, consider laying these pieces flat in a separate container or cloth to avoid getting tangled.Jewelry Organizer for Travel

A jewelry organizer like this one helps keep pearls protected and stops your pearls from getting scratched during travel.

  • Keep your pearl jewelry in a separate pocket or area of your carry-on luggage or personal item.

Keeping your pearl jewelry in a separate pocket or section of your luggage helps you access it quickly, keeps it secure and helps prevent damage if you need to take other things in and out of your luggage frequently while on the aircraft or in the airport.

The Don’ts of Packing Your Pearls for Any Adventure

  • Don't leave your jewelry lying out in your hotel room.

If you're worried about your pearls getting lost or stolen while in a hotel or resort, consider leaving them in a hotel safe when you're not wearing them.

  • Don't expose your pearls to too much direct sunlight or intense heat.

In other words, please don't leave them in the window of your hotel room with the southern sun shining on them all day. And definitely don't take them off and throw them on the front seat of your parked car with the windows rolled up in the middle of July in some unbelievably hot place like Phoenix, Arizona. Hot and sunny in a 115+ degrees is a definite no-no for pearls.

  • Don't leave them lying out - all naked - on the bathroom counter of your hotel room.

Why? Because contact with chemicals such as perfume sprays, hairspray, and whatever else people might be spraying in the bathroom are harmful to the delicate nacre of the pearl. So give your pearls some privacy in the bathroom and cover them up, okay? Or keep them in another room altogether and avoid the possibility of harm (You're welcome!).

  • Don’t swim in the pool or in the ocean with your pearls - PLEASE!

I know, we all like to look super glam at the pool or while splashing around at the beach, but even though pearls ‘come from the sea’, they’re not really good in water. Chlorinated water and salt water can damage their nacre and take away their gorgeous luster! And that’s not fun for anyone!

Now that you know how to pack your pearls and travel safely with them, here's a few pointers from me on why pearls make great travel companions and what pieces of pearl jewelry to take on vacation and what pieces of jewelry to leave at home when you travel.

 Wearing Faux Pearls on Vacation

  • Fewer pieces of pearl jewelry are needed for dressing up or going casual - pearls can do both!
  • They're lightweight and won't weigh down your luggage.
  • They usually don’t get as tangled as chains and other necklaces or bracelets.
  • They’re versatile enough to go with many styles and colors of outfits.
  • They’re classic and very classy - so they’re always appropriate and never out of style!
