30th Anniversary Gift Ideas: Pearls

 Pearl Anniversary Gift Ideas

'A wedding anniversary is the celebration of love, trust, partnership, tolerance and tenacity. The order varies for any given year.'  -  Paul Sweeney

A History of Love

The practice of celebrating a wedding anniversary stretches back to Medieval Germanic times. Couples that had reached certain milestones would celebrate together, along with family and friends within their communities. The husband would gift his wife with a Silver wreath for their 25th anniversary, and a Gold wreath upon reaching 50 years together. The practice later spread throughout Europe during the mid to late 1700s.

Originally, it was wives that received these honored gifts. In the past the wife was responsible for keeping a harmonious hearth and home, and so did the most work of maintaining the marriage and ensuring the couples’ longevity. Today both spouses exchange gifts as we are equally responsible for maintaining our vows and ensuring our marriages endure.

 History of Anniversary Gifts

The celebration of other marital anniversaries did not begin in earnest until the Victorian era. These new anniversary celebrations and gifts were viewed as a way to solidify matrimonial bonds for marriages that were created as “love matches”.

Until quite recently, the vast majority of marriages were created to consolidate family wealth, hereditary titles, land and family power. Society felt that the new “love matched” marriages needed additional incentives to bond couples together over the coming decades. The celebrations of milestone anniversaries were seen as the perfect way to accomplish this goal.

Anniversary Gifts are a modern invention

The late 1800s saw the creation of the Paper, Wood, Tin and Diamond Anniversary celebrations. Further additions were made throughout the years, with particular emphasis on 5- and 10-year marks.

By the 1930s, the Anniversary Gift List was officially created with special milestone years reserved for precious gemstones and metals. The longer the marriage, the more precious the gem or metal.

The 30th Anniversary is the Pearl Anniversary

The pearl is an organic gemstone, and the only precious gem that begins life as a tiny speck, becoming stronger and more beautiful as the years go by.

Pearls as an Anniversary gift symbolize Love, Patience, Loyalty and Integrity.

Beyond the pearl gift itself elements such as color, the number of gems or a play on words can make this anniversary gift absolutely unforgettable.
