Tahitian Pearl Quality
Black Tahitian pearls are traditionally graded on what is known as the A-D grading scale in the wholesale side of the industry, with ‘A’ grades representing the very finest pearls, down through ‘D’ grade, which are usually discarded so that the nuclei may be recycled. Factors such as rate of reflection, perfection of shape and the smoothness of the pearls’ surfaces are all evaluated before determining a pearls’ overall grade. Developed and implemented by Tahitian and South Sea pearl farmers, the A-D grading scale easily converts to the A-AAA systems more commonly used by dealers in the United States.
