Akoya pearls are grown and cultivated in both China and Japan. Although previously it was the Japanese pearls, such as the Mikimoto brand that were the most celebrated and sought after, Chinese Akoya pearls are rapidly becoming the pearl of choice because of their high quality and affordable prices. Akoya pearls are known for their remarkably small size and consistent roundness in shape, Akoya pearls are the ideal gem used to create necklaces and matching earrings.

Akoya pearls are produced by the oyster known as the Pinctada fucata martensii, which is cultivated in the ocean after farmers have inserted nucleus and tiny pieces of mantle tissues. After this has been implanted, the mollusk will begin to produce nacre in order to stop the substance from irritating.

On average it takes about 6 to 18 months for Akoya pearls to be ready for removal. The longer the oyster is left in the ocean, the higher the quality of the Akoya pearls that will be produced. Unfortunately, there is great risk in prolonging the growth period, as the mollusks are highly endangered by dying off or becoming damaged from storms.

Akoya pearls come in a variety of colors, and this is due to the seasonal changes they experience under the ocean. Colors of this gem include light shades of white, cream, pink, rose, green, blue, gold and silver. The size of the pearl ranges from as small as 2 millimeters to 18 mm.
