Hi Everybody-

It’s always amazing to me how quickly one year turns to the next; although time remains a constant, I know that my perception of its passage increases in speed along with my age… Such is the way of it. With another year about to pass away and we begin turning to the next chapter in our lives, many of us will take a moment and pause to reflect on life, relationships and the events of the past year in that small space of time where old meets new, and the page has yet to be turned.

For the last three and a half years that I have headed the Production Office at Pure I have met more than my fair share of wonderful people and seen some stunning jewelry- indeed, it’s been an easy slice of time, working here…The customers-turned-friends, the letters, the Art, and the joy of creation: bringing the elements of Nature, design and vision together into a single finished work of art… I think of all these things, and I wanted to say Thank You. To each and every one of you- working with you has been a privilege and a pleasure, and I am very much mindful that without you, there would be no Pure, and my little world would be that much greyer.

January, 2010 is bringing with it many exciting changes- changes that Pure has needed, and changes that many of you have suggested. PurePearls.com has been sold (!!) to a very fine gentleman from Kentucky named Bruce Turner, whom I’d like to take a moment to introduce to you. A former investment banker and family man, Bruce decided to take on the many challenges of owning a small online business and I am very pleased to have him here! The transaction took place in early November, and was quite a big surprise for all involved. Amanda is doing very well- we definitely keep in touch- but she did decide that it was time for her to move on from Pure. Bruce has some exciting new ideas for the website, and we are looking forward to a total site redesign!

In the next coming months you can expect to see a new, improved website, featuring bright, crisp, new pictures and innovative new jewelry selections in addition to our long-standing Classics. A more convenient shopping experience, greater user accessibility and an emphasis on updated graphics and layout are all features that we consider top priorities- and again, I’d very much like your ideas, thoughts and critiques as we begin a new chapter for PurePearls.com! My door (or phone, or email!) is always open, and I look forward to hearing from each and every one of you as we  begin a new chapter and a brand new Year at Pure. I have an absolutely gorgeous necklace of Champagne-colored White South Seas pearls that I’d like to feature for July; graduating from 12.0-13.0mm, these large pearls’ display some truly intense Orient and Luster, which brings into play that iridescence which is so hard to pin down in trying to describe it verbally… The word Electric comes to mind for these pearls- I see pinks, violets and creams that literally seem to crackle and snap with vitality. Since our inception, PurePearls.com has been heavily involved in giving to various charity organizations- the ones that are nearest and dearest to our hearts deal with the children who need the most help of all! Autism, cancer treatments, speech development and diabetes are just a few of the charities and organizations that we donate or try to raise awareness of every year. We’ve added a new one to our list!
 
We are proud to announce that we’ve begun working with the Foundation for Children with atypical HUS. This amazing foundation was formed and administered by Linda Burke and her brother Steve Greene, who are trying to fund the search for a cure for aHUS. Atypical HUS is a rare genetic disorder that affects the kidneys, and children diagnosed with aHUS are at very high risk for chronic complications like kidney failure and severely high blood pressure… not much is known about this deadly disorder that can devastate the lives of children and their families, except that aHUS disorder involves mutations on a chain of proteins called factor H. Factor H contains 20 chain proteins that allow our bodies to fight infections; in aHUS patients, the last 5 of proteins in that chain do not process amino acids properly, resulting in deadly illness.
 

It was this chain of proteins that led to a “Eureka!” moment for Linda Burke and Steven Greene; they decided to contact a pearl company (Us!) to see if they could have a very special bracelet made that symbolized the 15 white (known) proteins and 5 black (unknown) proteins using Freshwater pearls. The bracelet below is the result of their brilliant idea and our collaborative efforts, and can be found on their website: atypicalhus.org. The black and white Freshwater pearl bracelets have a 14K Yellow Gold Filigree Disc clasp and a laser-engraved 14K Gold charm inscribed with aHUS.
