My Daughter’s Birthday Gift

Monday, April 30th, 2007

Hi Everyone,

I received this beautiful story yesterday in my Inbox!  I know all of you appreciate the beauty of love that unfolds throughout life.    Best, Amanda

“Amanda, I wanted to share this with you . We spoke sometime ago about me buying some pearls for my daughters birthday..My husband and I were  about to leave on a business trip. I was worried about receiving them before we left.

Just to jog you memory… you probably have too many to recall.

Well, we did not receive them before we left. I had our mail held and I also spoke to our mail delivery person. However, when we returned there was our mail and the pearls were there. Safe and sound !  I gave them to my daughter the night of her birthday . When she opened them she wept.  I told her I wanted to give her joy not tears. She just said through her tears,” Momma, their beautiful  !  I always feel so unworthy and you and Dad make me feel like a little girl again. Will it be like this even when I am 65 ? “  I asked her when she would begin to  feel like her daughter is not HER little girl..

The next day at work her Dad told me , she was still gloating about her beautiful pearls.

Thanks for the talk, thanks for the safe delivery, thanks the lovely pearls. It has been an excellent experience.”

Mother’s Day Gift Surprise

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

Every Mother’s Day, my two sisters and I are always trying to find the perfect gift for my mother.  She is so loving and supportive of us and it’s difficult to find a gift that really shows how much we love and appreciate her.

When I first launched PurePearls.com, I was in graduate school studying full-time to be a Speech-Language Pathologist.  I know my mom very well and she would have been really worried about me studying and working so much!  I decided not tell my parents about the website for a few months so I wouldn’t cause them any concern.  After four months, I was ready to reveal exactly what I had been doing with my time, so on Mother’s Day in 2004, I gave my mom her very first set of pearls from my sisters and myself.  I then proceeded to tell her all about PurePearls.com and my hopes for my pearl business.  The beautiful pearl set was the best gift that we could have given her, and she wears them every day as a reminder of how much we love her!

For Mother’s Day this year, I love the multicolor Freshwater Tin Cup Necklace found here.  We can also make the Tin Cup Necklace in any other pearl size or color of your choice! The Spring colors and stylish design make this necklace a perfect way to tell your Mom just how much you love and cherish her!

Amanda

Chinese vs. Japanese Akoya Pearls

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

Customer Question:

Are your pearls Chinese or Japanese in origin?  Thanks, Rosalind

Answer:

Yes, our pearls under 7.5mm are harvested in China and 8mm and above are harvested in Japan.  This is actually industry standard.  Many jewelers will tell you that all their pearls come from Japan but this is not always the case.  Many Japanese farmers are buying the Chinese harvests in the 7.5mm and below range and marking up the prices and selling them as Japanese.  There is no difference in the look of a high quality Chinese versus a high quality Japanese pearl so jewelers and farmers are taking advantage of this.  In the last ten years, the Chinese have surpassed the Japanese in smaller pearl harvesting in quality and pricing and the Japanese farmers have taken a hit.  The old adage that Japanese pearls are better just simply isn’t the case anymore.  If you are buying a 7.5mm pearl or smaller, there’s a huge chance that the pearl is coming from China, whether the jeweler knows it or not.  For example, there are online competitors stating they buy only Japanese pearls, however, many of those pearls actually originated in China.

What is Overtone?

Friday, April 20th, 2007

Customer Question:

Hi, I’m looking to buy one of your Akoya pearl jewelry sets and am having a difficult time choosing overtone.  What exactly is overtone and which one should I choose?  Thanks, Angela

Answer:

As for the Akoya pearl color, the bodycolor is white and the pearl will look white.   Most high quality Akoya pearls have overtone; overtone is a very subtle hue that reflects from the pearls as the light refracts through the nacre.  The silver overtones will make the pearls appear very white.  Rose overtone gives a hint of pink to the pearl and is the most popular.  The rose gives a subtle glow to the pearl.  Cream, which is technically not an overtone but the bodycolor, gives a hint of yellow to the pearl and makes them look slightly ivory.

The best way to choose overtone is by your skin tone or by a matter of personal preference.  If your skin is fair to medium, rose overtone looks awesome.  Cream also looks nice with fair skin.  If you have olive skin tone, silver overtone looks really nice.  Also, take personal preference into consideration!   Best, Amanda
